Professor Jane Oakhill, University of Sussex
Jane Oakhill är brittisk kognitiv psykolog och en ledande expert inom läsförståelseutveckling. Hon är professor i experimentell psykologi vid University of Sussex. År 1991 tilldelades hon Spearman Medal från British Psychological Society för sina tidiga forskningsinsatser, och 2019 mottog hon Distinguished Scientific Contribution Award från Society for Text and Discourse för sitt långvariga arbete med barns lässvårigheter.

Talk 1:
Children’s difficulties with text comprehension: Causes and consequences.
A substantial minority of children have problems with text comprehension, even though their word recognition is within the normal range. Research has shown that skilled and less-skilled comprehenders differ in a number of ways, and in the first part of this presentation I will discuss the relative contribution of several theoretically relevant skills and abilities to the prediction of reading comprehension (as opposed to single word reading) during the early years of schooling (age 7 to 11). I will also consider some open questions and possible future directions for this research, with a particular focus on the relations between empathy and reading comprehension.
Talk 2:
Children’s reading comprehension: From theory and research to support and intervention.
In this second talk, I will consider how the research findings outlined previously (Talk 1) can be used in practice to support the development of children’s reading comprehension, and to provide interventions to improve reading comprehension. I will illustrate the talk with some examples taken from programmes that have been developed to support reading comprehension, and will consider how the requisite skills might best be implemented in practice during the early school years.
